Area of study

Core Subject: Beauty Therapy
Elective 1 : “Make-up and Body Painting”
Elective 2: “Aromatherapy, Spa Therapy and Nail Art”

The area of Cosmetology study mainly focus on the 90-hr core subject of Beauty Therapy, and 60-hr electives for either the subject of “Make-up and Body Painting” or the subject of “Aromatherapy, Spa Therapy and Nail Art”

Another 30-hr of China & Local Field trip will also be included in the course.
 
Synopsis
The course will give secondary school students a fundamental knowledge in different areas of Cosmetology. Apart from the core subject of Beauty Therapy, students can choose electives from “ Make-up and Body Painting” or “Aromatherapy, Spa Therapy and Nail Art ” according to their interests in the area of studies.
 
Rationale

According to our past three years experience in running the COC programmes, especially from the class performance and assessment results of the COC students, students reflect to us that their abilities and attention can go beyond one area of studies, such as only concentrate in the field of Beauty Therapy. To integrate different electives for more than one area of studies can assist students to diversify their learning abilities and eye-sights in order to achieve a higher level of accomplishment upon their completion in senior secondary school education.

 
Duration

180 hours (150 hours + 30 hours China/Local Field Trips project )

 
Aims and objectives

The course aims to give students a fundamental knowledge so that they will be able to fill a junior post in the field of Cosmetology such as Assistant Beauty Therapist, Assistant Make-up artist, Assistant Nail technician and Assistant Spa Therapist.

This course also prepares students for pre-employment training or further studies in the field of cosmetology. The field trips provide actual and real practical environment of the beauty salon; students are able to understand the rules and regulations of operating a beauty salon in Hong Kong and in China
 
Entry requirements

• Junior Secondary level or above
• With good conduct in school
• Show interest in their choice of studies

 
Articulation to further study and/or employment

Upon completion of the course, students can continue their studies in the 700-hour "Certificate in Cosmetology" or "Diploma in Cosmetology" offered by Caritas Community & Higher Education Service.

Students can work as a Assistant Beauty Therapist, Assistant Make-up artist, Assistant Nail technician and Assistant Spa Therapist according to their choices of area of studies.

 
Curriculum organisation

The contents of the core subjects "Beauty Therapy" are mainly concentrated on the skin care techniques, basic make-up techniques, manicure skills, basic hair setting techniques and professional ethics.

For the elective "Make-up and Body Painting", a higher level of Make-up and Body painting techniques will be introduced which will be included facial painting, neck and shoulder painting, Hands and legs painting, an advanced Air-brush body painting technique will also be introduced in the subject.

For the elective "Aromatherapy, Spa therapy and Nail Art", basic aromatherapy knowledge related to Spa therapy will be introduced to prepare students for the field of Spa therapy which are now internationally expanding field in the Cosmetology world. Nail Art will also be one of the topics for this elective which can help prepare students to become Assistant Nail Technician.

Course and all electives contents are mainly referring to the certificate level syllabus of international recognized beauty therapy examination board requirements, such as City & Guilds of London Institute, International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC), Confederation of International Beauty Therapist Association (CIBTAC) and Central TAFE of Australia.

China/ Local field trips will also be arranged throughout the course.

Upon completion of the course, students can participate in the certificate level examinations of City & Guilds of London Institute And Central TAFE

Learning and teaching

The course will be scheduled at 3 hours per lesson, theory session will normally be arranged on the first hour and the other 2 hours will be mainly concentrated on demonstrations and practical training.
Each student will require to prepare a "Case Studies File" for final assessment and International examination purposes
Students will pair-up during the practical trainings sessions.
Field trip project will be assigned to students after the Field Trip Study.

a) Both English and Cantonese will be used as medium of instruction.

Train-the-trainers programme

750 hours Train-the-trainers programme of City & Guilds of London Institute will be provided for further advancement. The programme is also for existing teachers to advance their knowledge in the field of Cosmetology. The programme will include 300 hours in the contents of “Teaching & Training” and 450 hours in the contents of “Beauty Therapy Training”. Upon the completion of the programme and successfully passed the International Beauty Therapy examinations , students can attain Diploma in Professional Education-Cosmetology, International Diploma in Teaching & training (City & Guilds), ITEC Diploma for Beauty Therapy, CIBTAC Skin Treatments Diploma, Diploma in Beauty Therapy (City & Guilds), Advanced Diploma in Beauty Therapy (City & Guilds).
